Howdy all!

Today we are going to talk about the questions that you all have been asking about the Console version of Crusader Kings III. While we are unfortunately not able to answer each and every question, we feel this list is a solid block of information from the most Frequently Asked.

These were pulled from the Forums, Reddit, Discord, Twitter, Facebook, and more. Hopefully this helps clear up some issues and clarifies a lot of the problems you have been facing.

To get these answers, I sat down with the team from Lab42 and Sanke, who calls the shots on the Publishing side of Crusader Kings. We discussed the issues at hand to get the best information from our friends at Lab42:

When is Ruler Designer coming?
Our intention is to get the ruler designer in November as part of the free Update that will be released together with Northern Lords.
  • Is there a chance this gets delayed? We hope not, but we may find issues or unexpected things to be done before their release. If we don’t find new obstacles along the way, this is the plan.

When are DLCs coming?
Let’s look at this from a development perspective: unexpected things may happen during this process that will require timeline changes. Not only on the DLC development itself - for example, after release, Lab42 and us decided to delay NL development a bit to focus on fixing crashes and other important bugfixes. This balance requires that we do not have a fixed timeline.

Again, let’s talk about intention. We would like to release:
  • Northern Lords and Ruler Designer by November
  • Royal Court earlier in 2023
  • Fate of Iberia a few months after that

This is a moving timeline, as releases for this kind of model often are. If we find major issues during one of those steps, or if we have to pause it to fix problems, things get delayed. Are we happy with that? Definitely not, because even if you think we don’t care, from a business perspective it would be great to release these as soon as possible, since we don’t want a lot of Royal Edition owners wondering where their content is. But our first priority is to make sure the game and previously released DLCs are in a good place before we move on to the next one.

When will console be getting free updates?
To make it easier to get the content from PC and put it into the console version, our goal is to group free updates and patches together with the releases. For example, the game will be upgraded to 1.4.4 with Northern Lords and 1.5.1 with Royal Court, featuring improvements made to their initial release versions on PC.

Why is Lab42 not communicating with players as much as we would like?
Let’s make this clear, it is not Lab42’s role to do the communication, it is ours at Paradox. They are focused on developing the console version and we are responsible for the publishing side. We apologize for the lack of communication in the past, but we want to improve this moving forward

Why is there no console roadmap?
There is a lot of back and forth between us and Lab42 about the console plans, sometimes we adjust them based on our discoveries, on issues that are affecting players, on platform needs and requests, etc. What we shared above should work as a rough timeline, but all plans can change as mentioned.

Why is there no endless end date without stopping after 1453 AD?
This is, unfortunately not possible with the technical limitations of the Consoles currently available due to memory and processing power. Since Crusader Kings III is such a large game, there were some features that needed to be adjusted or altered in order to make sure the game was not only playable but also a fun and enjoyable experience.

Additionally, we have this from the Tech Director over at Lab42:
"The longer the game is played the larger the amount of historical data that must be recorded in order to inform future choices by the game as the player plays out their gameplay scenario. This impacts both hardware memory as you play the game, and save data files as you save. Both of these things are limited and regimented on Consoles in a way that PCs generally don’t have to worry about, which would make it impossible to implement on consoles without making gameplay changes which would deliver a compromised experience to players."

Hopefully this helps to answer some of the questions you might have about the plans for the Console version and our vision for the game.

As always, keep letting us know if you are facing any issues or have any other questions!

Cheers,

-SP

Appreciate the update! I'm glad to see that there's at least now an estimated timeframe for the Royal Court DLC I purchased on Xbox. The only thing I would add is that you really shouldn't make a DLC available for sale without having a target date for release. I had just started playing CKIII and had no idea Royal Court had only been released on PC. It looked like it was available for Xbox and after I purchased it I tried to access the features and it was only then that I saw it wasn't released on console.

In the faq it says that ruler designer will drop together with Northern lords in a free update, does that mean I have to purchase the expansion pass to be able to play Northern lords or not?

Decent update, but too little, too late. Does nothing to address the two original sins of CK3 on console:

1. Paradox choosing to launch at PC patch 1.0 level where they had to have KNOWN that it would take a long time to a) stabilize, b) bring patch levels up to 1.4.x, and c) port over the first wave of content.

The right move would have been to delay the console port until it was ready to launch with 1.4.x, and they would have subsequently been able to deliver content in fairly short order, even factoring in some additional unexpected time for stabilization and bug fixing. This is exactly the approach Stellaris for console took, so it's not like they didn't have an example to follow.

2. Related to the above, offering the DLC content for sale beginning in January of this year. We all know we're not going to get Royal Court until well after a year has passed since the content first went on sale. Best case scenario, the very first DLC of the expansion pass launches 9 to 10 months following first on-sale, and the final and largest portion of the expansion pass is virtually guaranteed to launch well more than a year after it first went on sale.

The fact that Paradox has not apologized nor begged forgiveness for either of these things is very telling. All of the game's issues and all of the player's frustrations can be traced to these two decisions.

Paradox never should have released this game without being upfront with the console players. I have never seen a company run this poorly when it comes to communicating with their players. I would also like to point out. I’ve spent a lot of money on this game to get nothing in return. You wait 6 months to tell us we won’t get half the stuff that they get on PC. With all the issues we have dealt with….paradox is nothing but a piece of *** company.

Finally an update but way to late if you ask me, I mean there cannot be an excuse for not communicating, what is the reason Paradox suddenly decided to communicate out of the blue? Basically they say an lot of stuff in this thread but none of it does really matters great updated

Still not fixed
* not getting agreed upon gold for ransom
* ally armies break dancing between going back to their war and joining my battle
* still can't view Titles, Alliances or Claims from the character screen

So Lab42 is working on the game... but if we want information on how Lab42 is doing it comes through Paradox? That is absurd. The people that are actually working on the game should be communicating. Idk where y'all found Lab42 but please send em back there.

If you hire a contractor to build your house, you don't go straight to the drywall guy, you go to the contractor that hired him. Same thing here.

Then I’m surprised this is process seems so unfamiliar to you.

When porting games from PC to multiple consoles, I would expect 1) changes based on console hardware limitations compared to PC and 2) for the port to be behind the original in terms of release schedule.

I’m also not used to significant communication regarding ports, but I also don’t check for such things (outside of a random “game name update release date” google search every once and awhile).

Doesn’t change the fact paradox has been awful in communication and stringing their console players along. The money not only I but others have paid makes this so unacceptable. They released extra add ins we could buy only for us to still be in a waiting mode months later.

this game should have never been released to console without fixing all the issues and being totally transparent with what console players could expect.

Yes, expansion passes generally involve buying DLC that is not out yet and which you receive in the future. I’m pretty sure everywhere you bought it would have used words like “upcoming” and “when released to console”, so I don’t get how this is stringing you on? Northern Lords, for example, was released 6.5 months after launch for PC. It looks like they’re trying to get the same time frame for console.

Unfortunately, for ports, updates are generally slower and come in big bundles of fixes all at once, especially since they have to go through their respective console’s distribution systems.

I won’t common on the communication part, because I don’t care as much and that is simply a personal difference, but a lot of the other stuff you’re complaining about looks like normal port time lines and frustrations to me.
