Hello Architects,

After careful consideration, we have made the decision to delay the release of Prison Architect 2 to 7 May 2024. While we are already confident in the game, this extra time will enable us to fix more bugs and further optimize the game for all platforms. Although sticking to the original launch date was an option, we feel that taking this additional time is necessary to ensure that we offer you a smoother experience from day one.

We also want to show you how the development of the game is going in these final stages, which is why we'll be starting streams up in March to go alongside our Prison Architect Academy series. Stay tuned to find out the dates and times for these.

We would love to build the future of Prison Architect 2 and its community together with you. Please keep giving us suggestions and feedback, let’s go on this journey together!

Delaying to fix bugs and optimise the game is a sensible decision, but I can't help but think this game is going to struggle.

It's just so transparent that core features that were included in PA1 base game have been removed and the cynic in me predicts that you've done this to sell them to consumers as DLC at a later date.

Gangs, Executions, women prisoners...all of these were included for free in PA1, but won't be included in PA2 at launch.

It feels like you've carved up the original, dressed it up in ugly 3D graphics and are going to try and sell it back to people in little chunks over the next few years. I hope you (Paradox, not the individual who posted this) use the extra development time to reflect and reconsider some of the design choices you've made. I've never seen a game receive such a negative reception after being announced...so this might be an opportunity for you to consider WHY this has been the case.

What makes you think they won't be included for free in PA2 later?

The game will do fine, it won't struggle. The game here has more than the first game had at launch.

The fact that they are already selling a 'skins pack' for guard dogs as a pre-order incentive. The fact that it's Paradox and a Leopard doesn't change its spots. The fact that they have an entirely different business model to Introversion Software who added these features for free during PA1 development.

You could be right...they may add all of the features I've mentioned for free...but I'd be stunned if this is what occurs. I predict they either won't be added at all (Executions) or added as DLC (gangs).

I think you're being quite generous attributing the missing features to greed, when the more obvious explanation is that they've simply not managed to actually put them into the game in time. It's an explanation more consistent with recent experience of almost all other Paradox releases. It's also the most obvious explanation for a delay.

I'm happy to see the game delayed. It suggests that someone senior at Paradox is trying to put an end to the culture of rushing unfinished messes out the door. I wish them the best.

You do know paradox isn't the developer right? Also there's obviously going to be dlc, but purely cosmetic dlc is hardly a point in favor of your argument. The broader paradox community has generally advocated for dlc to be flavor as opposed to core mechanics. Skins is exactly in line with that sort of model.

Good!
Don't be afraid to delay a release! You guy don't own us anything until the game is out and people are buying it!
So take your time and polish the game as much as possible, don't repeat Cities: Skylines 2 mistakes!
