June is here already: It is time for a new Community Spotlight, featuring one of our beloved Crusader Kings III content creator.
We met with Koifish, a YouTuber creating rib-tickling videos about your favourite game. Onward, we're going on an adventure!

CK3 - Community Spotlight Koifish.jpg

Hello, Koifish! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us today! Let’s start with the first easy question: When did you first come to the game?
► Hello Hello!
I have been here since the launch of Crusader Kings 3, livestreaming the game one day before release. But before that I was a huge fan of CK2, and I’ve played way too many hours of it, both in single player and with friends!

▲ And how did you get to start as a Content Creator?
► I started out playing Overwatch back in 2017, but quickly realized that it wasn’t for me. After experimenting with different games, I realized that I really enjoyed making videos in games where I could tell my own stories. That’s when I started to really get into Crusader Kings 2 and the Mount and Blade series!

Once I started to really get into that style of making videos the views and the subscribers started to roll in, and before I knew it I had made a little community!
It never ceases to amaze me that so many people are watching and enjoying my videos!

▲ What kind of activities or content do you and your audience enjoy?
► I’m quite lucky that the content I enjoy making is the content most of my audience enjoys watching! I mainly focus on one-off challenges where the video revolves around me achieving a certain set goal. Like creating Scandinafrica, conquering through diplomacy, basically anything that gives the playthrough a clear set goal in mind so that I can say “Ok we did it!” at the end of the video.

Although I try to explain how some of the strategies I use work, I wouldn’t call my videos guides. There’s far calmer and more well structured videos that will teach you how to play the game. I’ve had my “guide” type videos described as “having a strategy told to you by an overly excited friend at 2 am”, and I don’t think that’s ever going to change!

▲ As a YouTuber, how do you ensure your audience is engaged and having fun?
► I try to bring as much positive energy into my videos as possible! People usually tell you to just be yourself, but when making content for my audience, I try to be the best version of myself possible. I let myself be immersed in the game by yelling angrily at my commanders during battles, crying out in grief when someone assassinates my heir, basically roleplaying a bit like the character I’m playing.

In short, I just go all in, without worrying about being stupid or silly, and just do my best to make a funny video. As cliche as it might sound, if my video can make one of my viewers have a slightly less shitty day, I’m happy!

▲ What would you say is your most memorable moment while recording a video?
► Easily my final goodbye video to CK2, that I released a few days before the launch of CK3!

I had planned it to just be one last “Let’s conquer all of Scandinavia in a lifetime”, but for the first time in all of the hours I’ve played, I managed to become IMMORTAL! It honestly felt as if the Paradox gods smiled down upon me as I gave my last goodbye to one of my favorite games, stepping over to a new chapter: CK3.

Your videos tend to focus on purposely grotesque content, but you succeed at creating something very funny! What’s your secret?
► I sacrifice daily.
And by sacrifice, I mean time and energy. I do my best to make sure that every video I make is as close to what I have in mind as possible. I feel like It’s really hard for me to figure out what makes my videos fun and enjoyable for other people. I tend to just do stuff that I personally would want to watch myself, and try to do it as well as I can.

▲ What challenges do you encounter when creating videos about Crusader Kings III, and how do you overcome them?
► Even though I’m the best CK3 player in the world, sometimes when I go for a challenge something goes wrong. My player character gets assassinated and my realm splits (Damn you gavelkind!), the AI does something incredibly unexpected, or the fun of the challenge I had in mind doesn’t translate well into the video.

Recording a video can take a lot of time, so having to scrap hours of footage because I forgot to keep my spymaster happy can be frustrating. But when that happens, I just remind myself that I have a really cool job, and I sit back down and play video games for a living.

▲ What other Content Creators do you enjoy watching?
► I watch a lot of creators regularly, but some of my favorites are Simo, iSorrowproductions and Ambiguous Amphibian.

But when it comes to watching YouTube with my wife, It’s everything from a woman that gives haircuts to dogs, existential dread from Kurzgesagt and those guys that make swimming pools in the jungle out of clay. I’ve heard that the clay swimming pool videos are actually fake, but I chose to believe anyway. It’s more fun that way.

▲ Do you have any advice for others looking to create videos on YouTube?
► Just start making them. As simple as it sounds, that’s literally the only way to start. Just keep making videos you enjoy making, and the audience will come to you! Either that or invent time travel and go back 5 years ago. It was a lot easier back then.

▲ Where can the community find more of your work?
