Greetings Mod lovers far and wide, previously we've covered heavy hitters like Europa Expanded and Ante Bellum, (with more biggies on the way) but we want to give the smaller mods their well-deserved time in the sun too.

Personally, I would encourage anyone with even a minor interest in modding to give it a shot, whether it's a tiny change here or there or an ambitious mega project. "Amateur" modding should not just be shown off but also encouraged! In the spirit of this, today we showcase some work in progress for a much smaller mod by an amateur with no public works... yet. We hope you enjoy this change in pace :)

I'll let @Gouda_boy introduce themselves and their work!

Introducing Dirinas

Hello fellow EU Modders and Mod Lovers!
My name is Gouda_boy, and with the help of my Partner Kretoma, who was onboarded later in this process to help with research, we have been working on a very special project of mine for the past year, slowly, but surely.

I have posted to the forums and other sites on occasion showing some of the work we have done and the progress we have made, but this will be the most in-depth dive into our work so far, in the hopes of garnering support from this community to get this mod released into Beta ASAP!

Both Kretoma and I are both amateur modders, but over the course of our time working on this mod, I have been able to learn so much about the ins and outs of modding, and part of what makes it so fun to do and be a part of for me is watching as your work culminates into something amazing. The scope of this Mod started out rather small as I originally planned to only make map changes, but it has only grown more and more with time, and eventually, we will have more to offer in this mod than I could have thought!

Our WIP mod, named *Dirinas* (we will workshop it), currently overhauls the provinces of all of Europe, parts of the Middle East, as well as North and West Africa, the latter two being the main focus for our first release to give unique missions, events, flavor, and more, as I felt this region could be so much more vibrant than it currently is in Vanilla.

North Africa

The Arab peoples of North Africa have been separated from their Amazigh counterparts, a unique cultural and ethnic group that has maintained their identity for centuries and have long been suppressed by their elite Arab overlords. Libyan culture has been created and taken over Tunisian and Egyptian along the Libyan Coast, and Berber has been split into several new groups.

West Africa
One of the most interesting regions to study, @Srminibagel provided a lot of help in figuring out ways to create a unique experience in Ghana, as this region has an incredible history, that we as players have rarely been able to learn or see in game.

Swap.png

Unite the Asante peoples of Ghana and create a strong new Regional Empire, Prevent Mali or Wolof from chaos and save them from their internal struggles, or aid in their collapse as the growing power of Songhai!

WestAfricaEasternPortion.png

Regain your lost lands as the Kingdom of Bornu, to be reunified as the great Kanem Empire, or play as one of the new Hausa Kingdoms or legitimize yourself as one of the “Banza Bakwai”. Perhaps even start as the Fulo and make your way over to conquer the Hausa and establish the Sokoto Caliphate!

Europe/Anatolia
Europe.png
Europe2.png

Take the opportunity to explore the plethora of new Tags on the continent, with many having unique paths to take and discover. Whether it be Austria or Poland, Denmark or Bohemia, Hesse or the mess that is the Palatinate, there is plenty new for all

Russian Region
Russia.png

Begin as the newly added cultures of the Mari or Mordvin peoples, caught in the sights of Muscovite imperialism and resist the rising threat. Or play a more revitalized Muscovy, Novgorod, or Ryazan and achieve new levels of Russian ambition!

Trade Goods with Kretoma

Hello people. I am @Kretoma (also known as [Canidae] Kretoma or Letan somewhere on the internets), the German biologist and “trade guy” of the mod. I am evaluating the economic background of provinces (currently focusing on trade goods, but development and others are also on the roadmap for a later time).

TradeGoods2.png

My background isn’t solely historiography, but also the natural sciences. I am a biology master’s student, but have done my Bachelor’s thesis in anthropology about animal rights of the middle ages and modern times, so quite an unusual one at that. The fascinating part of EU4 is how the world economy slowly starts to shift from a renewable solar-powered mostly subsistence system towards non-renewable consumption.

The vast majority of materials in EU4 are outright organic or use large quantities of organic material in their creation. So I think my biological approach towards province values seems justified. What do I mean by this? From my perspective modern society tends to smash all production into the categories of “energy and capital”, but, this is inaccurate, in a pre-industrial setting it is even more wrong. Converting one energy source into another is already really inefficient and it wasn’t even attempted in 1444.

GrainMap1.png
GrainMap2.png

Diversity is one of the leading principles of our mod (more of everything to enable better representation) so naturally, I was splitting the already existing trade goods. We already tend to use resources from other creators like the sadly outdated trade goods expanded, but of course, this wasn’t enough for me. Say goodbye to grain and hello to wheat, rye, barley, millet, rice, potatoes, and maize! This will also enable more organic events (pest species are really specific towards their host plants for example) in the future.

The trade goods could have been divided up even further, but... I had to be called back of course before it went out way too far. For the sake of mod completion time I was convinced this might not be the time. I hope for this mod to be released in the near future even if it's fairly limited at first release. So if anyone wants to help us to speed up the process that would be much appreciated.

Thank you for reading!

We both want to thank everyone for taking the time to look through our mod and hope you have enjoyed the progress we have made thus far. As well as the few Mod creators for their work that we have graciously Been able to use, and incorporate some of their assets into our mod, it truly made it just a little easier to keep doing our work!

Back as @Ryagi now. You can tell a lot of thought and effort was put into this project! Since this mod isn't released publicly quite yet we don't have any links to share this time around, but we do encourage you to reach out to @Gouda_boy if you are interested in any details about the mod!

We also hope you give some feedback for them here.

And as always let us know if you have any suggestions for future mod spotlights. Maybe there is even something you've got cooking up that you'd like us to shout out ;)
Until next time, have a wonderful day o/

Can I ask why you changed the map texture?
Hi, yes! That's a good question. The map textures are different because it is an asset from another mod that changes the map projection (so the Americas are actually where they should be) and size (You'll notice Africa looks much larger), and the textures were a part of that to fit with those changes.
Credit where credit is due, If I remember correctly, it is the "Typus Orbis Terrarum" mod, if you want to take a closer look at it on its own :)

Okay, I was wondering because it looks a bit off compared to the base game's. It looks exactly like Extended Timeline's map (probably all 3 are the same), and the texture has always struck me as too bright, too grainy, and perhaps too high res?

Nothing against you guys personally, but I am not a fan of spotlighting WIP mods.

For one, nobody can actually play with the mod. For another, I have seen quite a few WIP just not ever get finished and then get abandoned. Quite a few of them getting quite far into the development cycle.

In the end, the purpose of spotlighting a mod doesn't get fulfilled. To me spotlighting is about making users aware of a mod that has been "vetted" by pdx staff, as a good mod and having them try it out, while also showing that it is being actively developed even further, seeing as they are presented as dev diaries. It's an endorsement/sales pitch/dev diary all in one. Except, WIP is selling an unavailable product and chances are that I will forget about this mod by next week and thus never try it out, even if had gotten a slight interest.

Is Tripoli ruled by some hafsid prince?Or is it some Hafsid governor?
During the Spanish invasion of Tripoli in 1510, the city was defended by Sheikh Tripoli Abdullah bin Sharaf. The Catalan Wikipedia and some Arabic-language sources mention that in 1470-1460 the governors of Tripoli were independent of the Tunisian government.

Candidly I will say, showcasing a mod that isn't able to be played was a slight concern of mine. It's not something we want to get in the habit of doing for these all the time, more just something we tried to dip our toes in here, seeing if folks had an interest in this "type" of spotlight. (Maybe for a bit of variety too)
End of the day I'd say our main goals for the spotlights are:

1. Highlight/celebrate our awesome modding community
2. Make interesting content for the reader
3. Bring awareness to mods (Like you mentioned). Both for the users using the mods and the mod authors themselves.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record if you yourself or anyone has a good suggestion for a mod spotlight, especially one that might be lesser known, please do feel free to flood my DMs!

Hey the mod looks great but i just wanted to ask why did you make Transylvania and other parts of Eastern-hungary vassals? Historically they became somewhat independent but only after the split of Hungary by the Ottomans.

It is mainly to represent the chaos that happened after the battle of Varna. Hunyadi was basically fighting the Ottomans with only the resources he had direct control over (Transylvania, but also other parts of Hungary) while the other nobles were either outright rebelling like the Talovac family or the merchenaries in the north OR they were waiting for the smoke to clear. This continued when Cilli installed its puppet ruler on the throne who basically ignored the war with the Turks. While it could be argued we should have made a different Hunyadi TAG instead, i think currently Transylvania is enough to represent that. Hunyadi was only "governor" on 6 June 1446, so the one and a half year stuff in Hungary is currently one thing that is still worth improving. Do you want to help?

"At the next Diet of Hungary, which assembled in April 1445, the Estates decided that they would unanimously acknowledge the child Ladislaus V's rule if King Vladislaus, whose fate was still uncertain, had not arrived in Hungary by the end of May. The Estates also elected seven "Captains in Chief", including Hunyadi, each being responsible for the restoration of internal order in the territory allotted to them. Hunyadi was assigned to administer the lands east of the river Tisza. Here he possessed at least six castles and owned lands in about ten counties, which made him the most powerful baron in the region under his rule."

We could need maps for this described on wiki especially.

Mr. Kretoma's way of thinking about trade goods is very fresh and I thought it was very amazing (impressions of elementary school students)

The best I could come up with was to use Wikipedia to look up local specialties and edit the state's trade goods.
Even just "Think of a better state trade commodity from the point of view of the natural sciences and biology" is enough to send a message of admiration.
