Hello survivors! It's been about a week since the release of Rebirth, and it's great to see people finally enjoying it.

Rebirth adds a fair bit of depth to Surviving the Aftermath's gameplay, stretching well into the late-game particularly with the DLC's new terraforming mechanic. With this in mind, our wonderful devs at Iceflake have written the below Q&A to explore in further detail some of these features. If you'd like to know more about something not addressed below, feel free to leave a comment in this thread. Thank you!

Rebirth Q&A

How can I get more blight samples?

There are several ways to gain more blight samples with the main sources being in the colony. As a first step, scavenge blighted enemy corpses and blighted purplish trees with a purification post. Exploring the world map will also yield some samples. After that, upgrade your blight lab to unlock the exterminator post upgrade to remove and scavenge various hive types. You can also grow your own blight samples in large quantities by trading in either blight flower seeds or domesticated ranch beetles.

What are the purple trees about?

Polluted ground affects trees as well, infecting them with blight. These trees no longer yield wood, but can be cut down with a purification post to extract some blight samples. Infected trees have a clear purple color and can be found near pollution deposits and blight cores. Trees themselves do not spread the blight infection.

How can I terraform the soil?
  • First you must complete a special quest starting around day 20 to unlock the blight lab. Upgrading it with blight samples unlocks more buildings and other benefits, such as the basic and advanced terraformer. Once built and supplied with workers, water, energy and blight samples, they start transforming any type of soil into lush terraformed soil one patch at a time. You can move the work area to reach new, non-terraformed areas. The advanced version is both faster and more efficient, requiring less blight samples to transform an area.

What does terraforming do to the colony?
  • The effects of terraforming are many. You can push back the blighted soil, turning the colony green and productive. Open fields and wells work best when produced on terraformed soil, increasing your food and water output. The lush green soil also invigorates the trees and looks nicer than the barren wasteland from before. Various discovery tiers slowly clear the waters and the air, transforming the colony into a new paradise on Earth.

What do I do with all these new anti-blight buildings?
  • Purification post is meant for early game blight sample collection from carcasses and trees. Its upgraded version, extermination post, can deal with blighted nests, hives and lairs. Once you advance far enough in blight lab discovery tiers, you can unlock an upgrade to the environmental station called hazmat station. With it it’s finally possible to remove the root cause of the blight, the blight cores themselves.

How do I win?
  • Unlock terraformers from blight lab discoveries and build one or more around the colony to transform the soil. Remember to keep producing or scavenging blight samples to fuel these efforts. You’ve experienced most of the content by the time the terraforming meter on the top right is full and you’ve overcome the final threat.

BlightQueen.png

How should I deal with the new enemies?
  • The lowly blighted drone isn’t a major threat in itself, and can be handled by a single guard, specialist or guard tower. Their evolved and larger counterpart, blighted warrior, can cause harm to your colonists but several are needed to cause real damage. The major threat comes later in the game in the form of the blighted queen, which can not only deal and take damage but also infect your colonists with the blight. There are also talks of a gargantuan creature lurking somewhere underground, but that’s probably just a tall tale to scare the children.

BlightedColonist.png

My colonist has been infected with the blight, what can I do?
  • There is no cure for the blight, but it will take several days to incubate, giving you some time to prepare for its gruesome conclusion. Once the incubation period is over, the blight takes over its victim and turns them against the colony. Have guards or specialists on standby for this, so the blighted colonist doesn’t spread the infection further.

Can I protect the colony with guards or specialists?
  • Yes! Manned scout towers and guard posts now shoot back at your enemies with the latter able to hold their own against a small group of hostiles. Having one or more guard posts around the colony is a tremendous help against all manner of creatures and bandits and should be considered a priority as you progress in the game.
